Introduction

At the age of 13, in the 6th grade, I discovered a game called Dave. It was a simple yet captivating game that instantly hooked me. Now, at 30, my passion for video games remains as strong as ever, with weekly gaming sessions forming an integral part of my routine. This early encounter with gaming ignited a lifelong passion, influencing not only my choice of hobbies but also my career trajectory as a software engineer at Microsoft.

Personal Gaming Journey

My journey through the universe of gaming has been a diverse one, spanning various platforms like PCs, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. From Dave to Prince of Persia, Grand Theft Auto Vice City to Battlefield, and The Division to PUBG - I have explored various gaming worlds. Each game has enriched my life in different ways, offering not only entertainment but also a unique perspective on storytelling, problem-solving, and teamwork. Even today, as a software engineer, I regularly immerse myself in the world of Apex Legends, a testament to the lasting allure of gaming.

Gaming Culture in India

In India, gaming is often dismissed as a frivolous pastime, a wasteful diversion. The understanding and acceptance of gaming as a serious hobby, let alone a potential career, is still in its infancy. Limited access to gaming equipment due to financial constraints further restricts the growth of this culture. However, the landscape is gradually changing, and my personal journey is a testament to this evolution.

Gaming and Family

Despite my enthusiasm, my parents and wife initially struggled to understand my interest in gaming. My wife, in an attempt to understand my passion, has sat with me during my Apex Legends sessions, watching and trying to grasp the allure of this digital world. It was an alien concept to them, something they couldn't fully understand initially. However, over time, with patience and dialogue, they've come to accept my passion. My story is not unique in India; it echoes the experiences of many Indian gamers striving for acceptance within their families and society.

Gaming Addiction and Responsible Gaming

While gaming offers immense benefits, I also recognize its potential dangers, such as gaming addiction. It's essential to maintain a healthy balance and utilize tools for monitoring gameplay. Parental controls on consoles and PCs enable responsible gaming, allowing players to enjoy the benefits while minimizing the risks. Gaming should be encouraged, but it should never come at the cost of one's overall well-being.

Future of Gaming and eSports in India

Despite the challenges, I firmly believe in the immense potential of gaming and eSports in India. The burgeoning eSports industry, still in its nascent stage in India, could revolutionize the gaming landscape, providing lucrative career opportunities and mainstream recognition. Given India's population, we are potentially looking at one of the largest eSports markets in the world, only if we choose to nurture and invest in it.

Conclusion

My journey from a young gamer to a software engineer is a testament to the positive influence of gaming. I hope for a future where gaming is widely accepted and celebrated in India, where young gamers can pursue their passion without hesitation. I envision an India that not only consumes but also contributes to the global gaming culture. Let's play for such a future.
