The Secrets of Success: Lessons from Sam Altman, the Visionary Behind OpenAI
I recently came across this blog post by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and former president of Y Combinator, where he shares his insights on how to be successful. I found it very inspiring and thought-provoking, so I wanted to share it with you.
Sam Altman is a visionary entrepreneur and investor who has left an indelible mark on the tech industry.
In his blog post, Sam Altman distills his learnings from observing thousands of founders and thinking a lot about what it takes to make a huge amount of money or to create something important. He outlines 13 principles that he believes are essential for achieving outlier success. Some of them are:
- Compound yourself: Look for exponential curves in everything you do and aim for your life to follow an ever-increasing up-and-to-the-right trajectory.
- Have almost too much self-belief: Believe in yourself almost to the point of delusion and don’t let others’ opinions stop you from pursuing your contrarian ideas about the future.
- Learn to think independently: Cultivate original thinking and try to generate new ideas that solve important problems. Test them quickly in the real world and learn from your failures.
- Get good at “sales”: Be able to convince other people of what you believe in by having an inspiring vision, strong communication skills, some degree of charisma, and evidence of execution ability.
- Make it easy to take risks: Don’t overestimate risk and underestimate reward. Take risks early in your career when you have less to lose and more to gain. Look for small bets that have asymmetric upside.
- Focus: Spend more time thinking about what to focus on and work on the right thing instead of working many hours. Be unstoppable about getting your priorities accomplished quickly.
- Work hard: Work hard and smart at the same time. You will be competing with other very talented people who will have great ideas and be willing to work a lot. Extreme people get extreme results.
- Be bold: Be ambitious and don’t be afraid to work on what you really want to work on. Follow your curiosity and do things that seem exciting to you and others.
- Be willful: Bend the world to your will by asking for what you want and being persistent until you get it. Give yourself a lot of chances to get lucky.
- Be hard to compete with: Build up leverage by developing personal relationships, building a strong personal brand, or getting good at the intersection of multiple different fields. Don’t do what everyone else is doing.
- Build a network: Develop a network of talented people to work with by helping them as much as you can. Get good at discovering undiscovered talent and finding someone eminent to take a bet on you.
- You get rich by owning things: Own equity in something that increases rapidly in value instead of just selling your time. Time only scales linearly.
- Be internally driven: Do what you do to impress yourself and because you feel compelled to make something happen in the world. Don’t let external validation or peer pressure dictate your actions.
